What is the Vertebroplasty System?
Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fracture (OVCF) is one of the most common fragility fractures in the elderly. Its incidence rises markedly among people aged over 50. A slight bend, cough or even turning over in bed may trigger collapse of the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae, manifesting as acute low back pain, kyphotic deformity of the spine and loss of mobility.
Conventional conservative treatment requires prolonged bed rest, which is prone to secondary complications such as pulmonary infection, deep venous thrombosis and muscle atrophy. Open surgery carries substantial trauma and high risks for elderly patients. For this reason, percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) and percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) have become mainstream minimally invasive procedures for OVCF, as well as some pathological fractures caused by vertebral tumors and hemangiomas:
PVP Vertebroplasty Set: Under image guidance, percutaneous puncture is performed into the vertebral body. Bone cement (PMMA) is injected directly to stabilize the vertebral body immediately and block pain induced by micro-motion. Its pain relief rate ranges from 70% to 95%.
PKP Kyphoplasty Set: Before bone cement injection, an inflatable balloon is delivered through the working channel. The balloon is pressurized to expand, restore part of the collapsed vertebral height and create a low-pressure cavity within the vertebral body. Bone cement is then injected under low pressure.
