Why do we use pedicle screw for spinal fractures?
The lumbar spine, as the bottom structure of the human spine， which is the primary weight-bearing unit of the trunk, supporting the entire weight of the upper body. However, the lumbar spine can become “unstable” due to various etiologies. Examples include lumbar fractures, spondylolysis or degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis, degenerative lumbar scoliosis, lumbar disc herniation with vertebral endplate inflammation, open-mouth-like osteophytes on the anterior and posterior edges of vertebrae, severe hypertrophy of the posterior articular processes, and iatrogenic bone destruction. In these cases, the vertebral sequence of the lumbar spine may become disordered or even rotated and displaced, leading to impaired stability and subsequent low back pain in patients. Therefore, when the lumbar spine presents with the aforementioned “unstable” conditions and conservative treatment fails, “screw fixation” is required to maintain and enhance lumbar stability.
